Our Teachers

All of our teachers are passionate about music and the development of children.

They create a fun, informal social setting that spurs engagement and supports each child's musical development.

Owner, Licensed Director, and certified level two Music Together® teacher (one of only forty in the nation), Darlene, originally from New Orleans, first came to Music Together® as a parent in 1995 when, with her husband Paul and two sons, she participated in classes in Manhattan. She then completed her own training with Music Together® in Princeton at the Center for Music and Young Children. She received a B.F.A. in Modern Dance with a Musical Theatre emphasis from the University of Utah and an M.F.A. from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.

She starred as Dinah in the German production of Starlight Express, toured Europe as Anybodys in West Side Story, choreographed the Off Broadway premiere of Actors Shakespeare’s original musical Moliere’s Shorts, and was an assistant choreographer for the Disney channel’s New Mickey Mouse Club.

Her work with young audiences includes performances and choreography for Heart of the Matter Productions, a program designed for schools to inform children about good touch/bad touch. Darlene choreographed Cricket in Times Square and Hope for the Flowers, children's books that were adapted into musicals productions by Xan Johnson.

Darlene taught musical theatre workshops for the Youth Theatre Conservatory and has served as an adjunct instructor in the dance department at Weber State University. In 2005, Darlene choreographed the University of Utah's opera production of Street Scene and the Greek Show, Iphigenia at Aulis.

Paul, co-owner of Imagination Place, and his wife Darlene, found Music Together® so charming that they are pleased to offer this amazing program to SLC for the first time. Paul has a B.F.A. in Acting from the U of U. He studied with the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco, the British American Drama Academy in Oxford, and Shakespeare & Co. in Lenox, Mass. He is a member of Screen Actors Guild, Actors Equity Association and The American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. He performed Off Broadway, played Andy Ross on All My Children, and is continually working on TV and Radio. His Children’s Theatre experience includes work with the Touch Program touring through the elementary schools. He performed in The Cricket in Times Square and Charlotte's Web, both at Pioneer Theatre Company theatre, for young audiences. Recently Paul taught the Master Acting Class for the Theatre Youth Conservatory. He completed his teacher training with the Center For Music and Young Children in January 1999.

Tiffany is a certified level two Music Together® teacher (one of only forty in the nation), having done the training with the Center for Music and Young Children in Princeton, NJ. She received a B.S. in Speech and Hearing Science from the University of Utah, where she performed with the Salt Lake Institute Concert Choir. She has been a member of a professional singing trio, performing live as well as recording “jingles” for commercials. She currently performs the National Anthem at sporting events for the University of Utah athletic department. She became involved with Music Together® in her pursuit to share her love of music with her own children and believes music is one of the greatest gifts a parent can give a child.

Dawn is a certified level one Music Together® teacher, having completed her training with the Center for Music and Young Children. She holds a B.F.A. in Modern Dance with a minor in theater from the University of Utah. Dawn has performed professionally in plays and musicals, including productions for Sundance Children’s Theater. Currently, she performs with Wasatch Dance Collective and Samba Gringa, a Brazilian percussion band. She has taught dance at the Montesorri school for several years and is excited to teach children the joy of music through Music Together®.

Emily is a certified level one Music Together® teacher, having completed training with the Center for Music and Young Children. She earned her B.A. from Westminster College in Early Childhood Education with a music minor. While at Westminster, she performed with the Westminster Chamber Singers. She has recorded and performed with many local musicians while a member of the Salt Lake Children’s Choir. Emily has been involved with music since she was very young studying piano, violin, voice, and, most recently, guitar. Emily is excited to teach with Music Together®. She believes that music creates a strong foundation for all other learning.

Kristi is a certified level one Music Together® teacher, having done the training with the Center for Music and Young Children. She has a B.S. in Music Therapy from Utah State University and is a board-certified music therapist. She has worked with a variety of populations in this career but finds a special niche when working with children. She has worked as a music therapist for an Early Intervention Center for infants and toddlers with developmental needs, as well as at a nursing home, psychiatric hospital, and with older children with autism. Currently, she teaches private piano, voice, and guitar lessons in her home. She is excited to join the Music Together® team in Salt Lake City.

Mari Evans

Mari Abe Evans completed her Music Together® training with the Center for Music and Young Children in Princeton, NJ. Mari recently completed her Doctoral degree in Composition at the University of Utah. She has taught Musicianship and Music Theory classes at the University of Utah and Salt Lake Community College. Impressed by the Dalcroze philosophy of “everybody is born with a beat inside her or him,” she is now focused on developing musicianship in children. In addition to teaching music, Mari enjoys teaching Japanese to children at the Japanese Buddhist Temple in Salt Lake City. Mari believes her mission is to bring out every child’s goodness through sharing the joy of music.

Stephanie Engelbrecht

Stephanie is a certified level one Music Together® teacher, having completed her Music Together training with Music Together® co-founder Lili M. Levinowitz in November 2006. A native of Princeton, NJ, Stephanie received a B.A. in Music from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. While there, Stephanie developed a love for composition, writing and performing an original five song cycle based on the poetry of Brian Andreas for her senior capstone recital. Stephanie has been involved in teaching children from an early age in disciplines ranging from gymnastics to tae kwon do and skiing. Now that she has moved to Utah, Stephanie is looking forward to sharing her love of music with the children at the Imagination Place and in Park City. When she is not teaching Music Together® this winter, Stephanie will be on the mountain instructing skiing or teaching Vinyasa Yoga in Salt Lake City.

Susan Lee Andersen

Susan's piano career began at age 5 and includes training from teachers in the Bay Area of California, as well as in Utah. These mentors include Ricks Knudsen and Grant Johanneson.

Susan taught her first piano lessons in Kanpur, India, when she was 15. Locally, her students (ranging in age from 4 to 84) and instrumental ensembles have performed at The Children's Museum, for the former Governor Michael Leavitt in the Governor's Mansion, and in Abravanel Hall.

In 1980, she established an after-school piano instruction program in the Salt Lake City School District through Community Education.

By implementing music--especially piano--Susan promotes positive social interaction, sparks creativity, and enhances self-esteem.

Susan holds a B.S. from the University of Utah.

Scott Foust

Scott Foust, a piano teacher, is finishing his B.M.U.S. at the University of Utah in piano performance. He has played piano since he was four years old. Scott has performed in choir, theatre, jazz, and marching bands state-wide. He presently teaches for the preparatory division of music at the University of Utah.

Tyler McIntosh

Tyler McIntosh is 18 years old and a soon-to be-graduate of East High School. Tyler has been competing in tournaments since kindergarten and has won both state and national titles. At 18, Tyler has extensive teaching credentials. He has been teaching both private and group lessons for the past six years, and has taught and trained state champions. Tyler knows from personal experience the educational benefits that chess brings and that no age is too young to begin a child’s chess training.

Dylan Baker

Dylan Baker, one of our guitar teachers, is a real life non-digital guitar hero! He is currently a music major studying jazz guitar performance at the University of Utah. He has playing experience with several jazz bands, and has extensive singing and songwriting abilities. He has been playing the guitar for over eight years. Dylan loves all genres of music, and loves to teach any genre that his students enjoy.

Debbie is a registered Music Together® teacher, having completed her training with Music Together® co-founder Lili M. Levinowitz. A former graduate of BYU, she is currently pursuing a second degree in music at the UVU with an emphasis on voice and an early childhood education certificate. Debbie is a trained Suzuki voice teacher and a private vocal instructor who has worked with children from preschool through high school.

She loves choral singing and has lent her beautiful singing voice to many performing groups over the years. Debbie believes individual and group vocal instruction can make a real difference in a child's life, helping them to become more confident, more creative, more intelligent, and happier human beings. TO be a part of strengthening family bonds and establishing a foundation for a lifetime of music is a beautiful thing, and teaching Music Together® provides her with yet another opportunity to share her love of singing, dancing, and guitar picking.

Lauren Begent

Lauren was the concert master of Cottonwood High school's orchestra, as well as participated and/or lead several orchestra ensembles for musicals such as Les Miserables, Fiddler on the Roof, and Grease. She toured to California, South Dakota, and Nevada with Granite Youth Symphony for several years. Lauren lettered in music in highschool, and also won school trophies and awards for her avid playing.

She is expanding her musical abilities and style now by playing in quintets for weddings and events, composing her own music, and playing with several bands in Salt Lake City. Lauren has a deep love and appreciation of the great gift music can bring into your life, and would like to teach others to appreciate their own unique musical abilities.

Braden Rawlings

Braden Rawlings has had a love of music his entire life. Groomed by older brothers who worshiped musicians such as Jimmy Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eric Clapton, and Jerry Garcia, Braden has been playing music since he was twelve years old. He began playing the guitar and drums and excelled in such throughout high school, and soon found his love of writing. He played drums in a band with his brothers called Sugar Street that was wildly popular in high school, and has continued to play drums and guitar in various venues with friends and family any chance he gets. Braden loves writing country blue grass tunes such as Hot Hell Blues, Nashville, and One Soldier Down that receive praise from all who hear them. He is currently part of a local T.V. show and website called "momumo" (movies, music, and more) which teaches tutorials on movie making and music. Braden has been married to a babe-o-licious babe since January of 2006 and they had their first child, a son named Jesse West Rawlings on June 30, 2008!
